The history of the escapulario has its roots in
the 12th century foundation of the Order of the Carmelites in Palestine.
It was not the charisma of an individual person, but that of a confraternity,
i. e. the community's form of living in groups that initially sparked
the Order's history. At the outset, the community adhered to austere
rules, such as poverty, solitude and abstaining from eating meat.
Due to the Order's far-reaching and wide-ranging missionary work,
some of the monks adapted to the occidental way of living, leading
to deterioration of the strict rules. The Englishman and General
of the Order Simon Stock, who transformed the Carmelites into a
mendicant order, supported this. As lore has it, Mother Mary appeared
to him and gave him the scapular to incorporate into the Order's
habit.
The scapular was a wrap worn over the monks' actual robe. It was
made up of two pieces of cloth which were worn over the breast and
back, almost touching the ground at their tail end. Later on, pictures
of saints were applied to the wrap. Worn as a waistcoat, Maria and
Jesus on the breast and back protected the bearer from evil.
Today, the Carmelite monks give the escapulario in thanks for donations
made for the sake of Brazilian street children.

Brazil has approx. 169 mill. inhabitants, roughly 10 mill. being
street children. Necessitated by their parents' poverty, many children
find themselves forced to make their own living. In the process,
they often drift off into criminal environments, since their inconspicuousness
makes them good victims for misuse as drug couriers. Hunger and
lack of affection quickly drive them to succumb to addiction, themselves.
They no longer attend classes. Their social descent is predetermined.
When these children grow up, they, too, will not be able to nourish
a family.
This puts the seal on a disastrous circle.
